Arnon Milchan was prominent among the smiling faces at last night’s Academy Awards when the film was he co-produced won in the category of best picture, which to many was a surprise selection.
For Milchan who has been involved in the movie industry for more than thirty years, this year’s ceremony is the nearest he has come to date to winning an Oscar. 12 Years a Slave also became the first movie in the 86 years history of the Academy Awards to seen an Oscar awarded to a colored director, with English director Steve McQueen picking up the prize for best picture, regarded as the most important in the film industry.
This year’s Oscar ceremonies produced a number of surprises and quite a few disappointments with two of the strongest fancied films such as Milchan’s close friend, Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle written and directed by David O. Russell failing to pick up a single Oscar between them.
On the other hand 12 Years a Slave, which portrayed in graphic accuracy the terrible conditions of pre-Civil War American slavery won an additional two Oscars, including one for best supporting actress which was won by Lupita Nyong’o in our first major movie role whilst John Ridley picked up the Oscar for best adapted screenplay, adapting the 1853 memoir of Solomon Northup to suit the big screen.
Last night’s Academy Awards ceremony was looking to be one of the most open in many years, with the more than 6, 000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences not going for any clear-cut winner instead almost equally distributing Oscar statuettes among the top quality movies that have been released this year.
Another piece of movie history was made when Mexican born filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron, won the best director award for his movie Gravity making him the first Latin American film director to win an Oscar.
12 Years a Slave has proved to be a winner for Arnon Milchan not only at the Oscar awards ceremony, but also at the box office having drawn more than $150 million so far, which is highly creditable considering that the movie cost just $20 million to make.
